Cole Porter’s Piano

A friend of mine was in New York City last weekend, staying at The Waldorf Astoria. In the lobby they have Cole Porter‘s piano.
There are places on the web (like Ask.com) where it says that guests in the Cocktail Terrace “are often entertained with live music played on” the piano. But, as the plaque shown here indicates, the piano is now being preserved as a relic and not played.
I think Cole Porter actually lived in the Waldorf Towers from 1939 until 1964.
I didn’t know that. Makes sense, given his string of shows on Broadway during those years.
I have stayed at The Waldorf, and have been on the ground floor of The Towers. Never stayed in that section, though. I hear the suites are spectacular.
I was wondering about the make of the piano. Turns out, Porter was a “Steinway Artist,” meaning he played their instruments, exclusively, and was featured prominently on the company’s brag list.
Hey, I read a lot of blogs on a daily basis and for the most part, people lack substance but, I just wanted to make a quick comment to say GREAT blog!…..I”ll be checking in on a regularly now….Keep up the good work! 🙂
